Generational Curse

What is a generational curse and how does it apply to your life?

Generation is defined by the Merriam Dictionary (2018), as a body of living beings constituting a single step in the line of descent from an ancestor, (Merriam Dictionary 2018).

A curse is defined by the Merriam Dictionary (2018), as a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one; a profane or obscene oath or word; evil or misfortune that comes as if in response to imprecation or as retribution, (Merriam Dictionary 2018).

If you understand these definitions then you can believe that there are in fact generational curses.  A generational curse is passed down from one generation to another.

It often comes as a surprise when you realize that you are in fact the same as your parent or grandparent. Or you maybe find yourself doing things that they once did or still do.  I know this might be difficult to process but we do resemble them in many ways, not just in looks. We observe our caregivers so if that is the case how can you deny that we do in fact face the same curses that our parents did, or still do. Some may say we may have learned to.

The Bible tells us that the sin of the parents can cause that same pollution to be handed down to their children. I am not saying we intentionally pass things onto our children. That is not the case, but we do in fact pass things to our children that we do not even realize. We all fight negative energy every day, we all encounter lost souls, some of us choose to remain positive and some of us choose to go to the negative side.  The way we handle ourselves daily, our children observe.

If you understand that observing is a form of learning then you can understand how we do in fact teach our children our own generational curse, which then becomes theirs, hence the generational aspect being handed down. If you struggle with the same bondage as your parents or see siblings with the same problems, then it is quite possible that you are suffering from the effects of a generational curse.

A generational curse is often passed down and we don’t recognize it until it is too late. Clark (2018), stated someone up the family tree could have been the originator. A generational curse can come in many forms, such as anger, depression, emotional instability, poverty, family breakdowns, lack of vision, lack of ambition, lack of education, the list goes on and on. Anything that is negative that is holding you back that your parents allowed to hold them back is a generational curse. A generational curse is a known barrier.

Breaking family curses require you to think about what re-occurring things attack your family, or you in general. You have to take responsibility for you!  Understand what you are doing to stay in that same cycle. How are you handling things in your life? Does the way you handle things or the way you think, remind you of anybody? Are you angry? Was your parent an angry parent? Are you depressed? Was your parent or grandparent depressed? Are you trapped in the same way of thinking that your parents or grandparents were?  Do you want to continue in this cycle?

I encourage you to recognize what generational curse you are involved in and take responsibility for yourself and change your approach. I encourage you to decide right now if you want to continue the generational curse that you currently face. I encourage you to self-reflect daily and realize where you can change your life and improve. You are not your parent! You are not your grandparent! You are not what happened to you! You are you, and you have a purpose! Realize your worth! Know who you are and tap into your greatness. Break those generational curses

“We are not here to curse the darkness, but to light the candle that can guide us thru that darkness to a safe and sane future”

John F. Kennedy
